Bad Hat
So yesterday I am looking all over the place for a good bucket hat pattern. Hilde did find a good one (and free), but it wasn’t quite what I wanted. So, I thought, “no problem, I’ll just design one myself”. Never having made a hat, I guess, should have worried me a little. Nope! I plunged right in; that’s just how I operate.
Here is my version of the bucket hat:rofl::rofl: ![]()

Not quite what it should be, eh? The part below the mango color should be a wide brim that would either stick out 90 degrees from the hat part or at least 45.
I HATE to frog. I would really rather try to salvage this if possible. By the way, doesn’t it remind you a bit of Dumb Donald from the Fat Albert cartoon? My thoughts so far:
1. Isn’t there something like spray starch except that you could dunk the whole piece in it? Maybe that would make it stiff enough to fashion a brim that would stay in place. (hmmm, maybe some hat viagra?)
2. Wire? Thin? Threaded around the edge and under the stripe where the brim should begin.
3. Ditch the hat effort and call it a bowl cozy.
4. Oh, and ILOVE to felt, but this is cotton

Hi! I followed your comment link back, and I totally know what a problem hats are. So here is my advice…
1) if it’s wool, felt it. If it shrinks too much, it can go to a kid
2) frog it and try again in a wayyyy smaller needle size- the gauge has betrayed you. Admittedly, a pain in the butt, but the color and the idea are very cute, and you’ll have plenty of yarn to work with.
3) fuggetaboutit. I have this giant fuzzy white sweater in a closet at home… it’s my version of a skeleton thank you very much!
4) depending on the fiber, you could string it so it becomes a loofah/bath scrub thingy.
if all else fails, send it your mom as a holiday present. She’ll have to love it, it’s in the handbook
You could add i-cord handles and a drawstring and call it a beach bag. Too bad it’s not wool, it would probably felt to the perfect size! :frog:
[...] Oh and another problem. My luck with hats…turns out I have none. I wanted to whip up a cute fall hat for my Chicago trip…sort of a cloche style was what I had in mind. So I whipped out the crochet hook for the first time in a while. While I hadn’t forgotten how to crochet, I didn’t suddenly gain mad hat making skills either. It fits but a cloche it is not. It will soon be frogged…is it still “frogging” if it’s crochet? Good question for Drew. Note to self, ask Drew. Guess I will just have to use a pattern for hats from now on. [...]
