Another darn Bordhi!
Well I’m still not 100% sure what’s going on, but I tried another sock out of the New Pathways
book by Cat Bordhi and the sizing is way off! It’s not a gauge thing since you plug whatever your gauge happens to be into a chart. I know I’m reading it right this time so I’ll have to do some more research to figure out what is going on. Fortunately, I sort of
expected this so I was able to compensate to make it fit. I am totally in love with the yarn! Interlacements Tiny Toes…just YUM.
In other sock news, I finished the second pair of Baudelaire socks I started forever ago with Schoeller + Stahl Fortissima Socka (which by the way I hate and will never use again). Erica has claimed them and they will be shipped off to their new owner shortly. I used US 1 needles and the row gauge was significantly off from the pattern which resulted in several frogging episodes before I finally got the length right. That is one thing I have decided I hate about following a pattern when doing socks…the fit is never quite as good as when I just gauge it myself.
Fortunately for my next little project, gauge was completely irrelevant. I knew I just had to make one of these as soon as I saw it. Freakin’ adorable.
Finally, I may be MIA for a few days. Remember how I briefly mentioned that I had a trip to the emergency room right before I left for AZ in January? Well, I had an appointment on Friday to get my nose checked out and it turns out I’ll be having surgery TOMORROW. Yep, that quick. Turns out he had a cancellation so I’m in. I think it’s a good thing though so I don’t’ have time to really think about it. Wish me luck!

Here’s a thought – if the pattern was written for dpns and you’re using Turbo Addis (for two circs or magic loop) the size is different! A size 2 on the dpns is smaller than the size 2 on the Turbo Addi’s. I just discovered this for my argyle socks (after I was nearly done with the leg of the sock and realized it was big enough to fit an elephant. I hope this helps.
I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I hate Bordhi’s books. They’re difficult to understand, have crappy illustrations, and are always wrong one way or another. When I tried to teach myself how to knit two socks on two circs using her book, it remained a mystery. I finally found “Crazy Toes, Crazy Heels” by Queen Kahuna and it was a snap. I was an idiot and bought the architecture book by Bordhi and got exactly what I thought I might – another useless book. It’s the last time I’ll buy another of her books.
This is addressed to Jennifer who left a comment before mine: It doesn’t matter what type of needle you buy – if it’s from another manufacturer, you can pretty much be sure that they’re going to be different sizes. Even different types of needles from the same manufacturer can be off a little (but that difference will show up in your gauge). That’s why it’s so important to use the same needles throughout a project. There is no standard for needles when it comes to sizing; you just have to do gauge swatches for every single project you do (unless you’re using the same needles and yarn for another pair of the same pattern). It all boils down to the dreaded swatch. I don’t cut mine loose from the ball – I just measure it and unravel the yarn so I don’t waste any (especially important if you have just enough for the project). I know that a lot of people wash and block the swatch, then take a gauge, but I’ve never found the difference to be significant enough to warrant doing that. :knitsock:
Hope all goes well tomorrow!!!
I’m just so glad I’m not the only one who got duffel bags instead of socks out of the Bordhi book. I’m thinking maybe if I use my sock software for the numbers, then use her construction, I’ll get a lot closer.
Nasal surgery? On a MONDAY? My sympathy knows no bounds (nose no bounds?). At least you’ll have the Mochimochi snails to look forward to.
I wish you a quick surgery and a speedy recovery!
Good luck with the surgery! I loved seeing the little snail pattern, though I haven’t made one yet. Did you find it as fiddly as she said they were?
I’m a little late, but I hope surgery all went well! I love the little snail.
